Archeology: BRICK + GOLD
2025
In June of 2025, I was commissioned by Feldman Architecture to create a site-specific artwork at their San Francisco Headquarters, located at 1648 Pacific Avenue. This landmark building was originally the site of Engine Company No. 8, a three-level firehouse designed by City Architect John Reid Jr., built in 1916. I was immediately drawn to a wall of exposed brick that placed the building's history. Within the wall there were existing excavations, natural deterioration, and recesses that accommodated ancient plumbing and structural interventions. I made further excavations and recesses that resemble gold bricks as well as a shelving system to accommodate the architect’s 3D models. I chose to work with the existing conditions and celebrated these cracks and indentations with pointed illuminations and gold leaf. I have long worked in and around architecture, construction sites, and historical buildings. I work with archaeology in reverse and the notion of future ruins. The final piece Archeology: BRICK+ GOLD is punctuated by an existing pipe that is painted fire-engine red and disappears into the floor.
